Sunthorn Phu's Birthday

Source: http://www.google.com/logos/sunthornphu10-hp.jpg
Phra Sunthorn Vohara, known as Sunthorn Phu, (26 June 1786–1855) is Thailand’s best-known royal poet. He was active in the Rattanakosin era, born four years after its founding with the establishment of Bangkok as Thailand's new capital.

Sunthorn Phu's career as a royal poet began in the reign of King Rama II, and when the king died, he resigned from the role and entered the monkhood, where he remained for the next 20 years. Late in the reign of King Rama III, he emerged and took over duties as royal scribe. In the reign of King Rama IV, he was appointed to the post of director of the department of royal scribes. This was the last post he held at court, and the one in which he earned the title "Phra".

Sunthorn Phu was renowned especially for composing verse, and his conventions in epic poetry (Nirat) are popular in Thailand to the present day. His canonical works include Nirat Phukaothong (a collection of poems depicting his journey to the Golden Mountain), Nirat Suphan (depicting his journey to Suphanburi Province) and the Phra Apaimanee saga.

In 1986, the 200th anniversary of his birth, Sunthorn Phu was honored by UNESCO as a great world poet.

Recently, his literary works have been adapted in various media such as comics, films and songs.

His statue was erected in Klaeng District, Rayong Province, the birthplace of his father. His birthday has been declared as Sunthorn Phu day. [Read more on Wikipedia]

Konrad Zuse (pronounced [ˈkɔnʁat ˈtsuːzə]; 22 June 1910 Berlin – 18 December 1995 Hünfeld near Fulda) was a German engineer and computer pioneer.

His greatest achievement was the world's first functional program-controlled Turing-complete computer, the Z3, in 1941 (the program was stored on a punched tape). He received the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring in 1964 for the Z3. His S2 computing machine is considered the first process-controlled computer, which was used to help develop the Henschel Werke Hs 293 and Hs 294, which were precursors to the modern cruise missile. It is also considered one of the first analog-to-digital converters. Many of his projects were in collaboration with the Nazi Germany, which supported, financed, and deployed many of them. Asteroid Explorer Hayabusa Returns

Source: http://www.google.com/logos/hayabusa10-hp.gif
Hayabusa (はやぶさ?, literally "peregrine falcon") was an unmanned spacecraft developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to return a sample of material from a small near-Earth asteroid named 25143 Itokawa to Earth for further analysis.

Hayabusa, formerly known as MUSES-C for Mu Space Engineering Spacecraft C, was launched on 9 May 2003 and rendezvoused with Itokawa in mid-September 2005. After arriving at Itokawa, Hayabusa studied the asteroid's shape, spin, topography, colour, composition, density, and history. In November 2005, it landed on the asteroid and attempted to collect samples but it is not clear whether the sampling mechanism worked as intended. Nevertheless, there is a high probability that some dust was trapped in the sampling chamber during contact with the asteroid, so the chamber was sealed, and the spacecraft returned to Earth on 13 June 2010.

The spacecraft also carried a detachable minilander, MINERVA, but this failed to reach the surface. [Read more on Wikipedia]

Philippines Independence Day

Source: http://www.google.com/logos/philippinesind2010-hp.gif
The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred on June 12, 1898 in Cavite II el Viejo (now Kawit), Cavite, Philippines. With the public reading of the Act of the Declaration of Independence, Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from the colonial rule of Spain, which had been recently defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

The declaration, however, was neither recognized by the United States nor Spain. The Spanish government later ceded the Philippines to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris that ended the Spanish-American War. The United States finally recognized Philippine independence on July 4, 1946 in the Treaty of Manila. July 4 was observed in the Philippines as Independence Day until August 4, 1964 when, upon the advice of historians and the urging of nationalists, President Diosdado Macapagal signed into law Republic Act No. 4166 designating June 12 as the country's Independence Day. June 12 had previously been observed as Flag Day and many government buildings are urged to display the Philippine Flag in their offices. [Read more on Wikipedia]

The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the 19th FIFA World Cup, the world championship for men's national association football teams. It took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. The bidding process for hosting the tournament finals was open only to African nations; in 2004, the international football federation, FIFA, selected South Africa over Egypt and Morocco to become the first African nation to host the finals.

The matches were played in ten stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final played at the Soccer City stadium in South Africa's largest city, Johannesburg. Thirty-two teams were selected for participation via a worldwide qualification tournament that began in August 2007. In the first round of the tournament finals, the teams competed in round-robin groups of four teams for points, with the top two teams in each group proceeding. These sixteen teams advanced to the knockout stage, where three rounds of play decided which teams would participate in the final.

In the final, Spain, the European champions, defeated third-time finalists the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time, with Andrés Iniesta's goal in the 116th minute giving Spain their first world title, the first time that a European nation has won the tournament outside its home continent. Host nation South Africa, 2006 world champions Italy and 2006 runners-up France were eliminated in the first round of the tournament. [Read more on Wikipedia]
